Block 1/14 of the Pan Am Village site was a collaboration between two architectural firms about two conjoined buildings. Approaching Cherry street from the west, the new YMCA, designed by MJMA, animates the soon-to-be bustling Cherry Street while the George Brown Student Residence forms a dramatic backdrop along its eastern and northern edges with its syncopated face and structural gymnastics. The George Brown Student Residence occupies two nine-storey bar buildings with seven floors of student housing surmounting a two-storey base occupied by reception lobbiesthat connect the residence and the YMCA, and a mezzanine-level conference centre. Above the base, students are able to move freely and securely between residential floors, via a glazed bridge that connects the two bar buildings. The eastern bar projects out over the Front Street promenade, supported by canted columns that allow views into the lobby/conference centre, and along the full expanse of the Front Street promenade from Cherry Street to the Don River Park.
