The City of Oshawa has been undergoing an economic transformation recently with a broad shift from the industrial (specifically automotive) sector to the technology sector. This has led to substantial growth in Oshawa’s post-secondary institutions – and a subsequent need to house the new student body. Consequently private sector development has been progressively improving the student housing sector. In turn these developments compliment and benefit local institutions.

This project located at 1800 Simcoe Street North combines stacked townhouses and a low-rise apartment block with micro-unit living thereby allowing students access to improved housing with modern amenities suited to student needs as well as supporting retail located on-site. It also provides new entry-level investment opportunities in real estate where most new investors would find today’s market impenetrable

Starting with a pre-ordained site plan and massing, Standard Practice looked toward materiality and rigorous space planning within the buildings to enrich the environment while providing al the day-to-day requirements of the program. The development is also designed to meet the Oshawa Accessibility Design Standards (OADS).
